Underscoring a new tech trend this year, South Korea’s Samsung Electronics on Feb. 8 unveiled its new smart phone that lets users dial numbers and call up features by touch, rather than with a keypad. Like Apple’s innovative iPhone, the new Samsung phone, Ultra Smart F700, uses a “drag and drop” method of touch screen for easier menu navigation, scrolling through a music play list, surfing the Web, and controlling volume and brightness.

The big difference from the iPhone is that the Ultra Smart also sports a QWERTY keypad that slides open sideway for those preferring buttons and thumb-typing for sending messages and keying in search words. It also supports latest high-speed mobile technology called the High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) to let users download a 4-megabyte music file in just 4.4 seconds. The multimedia device also features a 5-megapixel camera with auto focus, a full HTML Web browser, and a video player.

The Ultra Smart, due to hit the European market in the third quarter of this year, is smaller but thicker than the iPhone. It has 2.8-inch screen (against the iPhone’s 3.5-in. screen) and is 16.4 mm thick (11.6 mm). The timing of the U.S. debut and pricing of the Samsung phone have yet to be decided. Next month, LG Electronics will start selling its touch-screen phone, called the Prada phone, which the Korean maker developed together with Italian design house Prada.

Blackberry Vs. iPhone

iphoneimageTouchscreen phones are the new “in” device when it comes to mobile phones and it seems that 2008 will be the year when the mobile phone manufacturers really ramp up the releases of these devices to meet consumer demand for smarter, more advanced touchscreen phones.  Touchscreen phones like the iPhone are given credit for the increased use of such applications.  Touch screen cell phones connect you to the world literally at a touch of a finger.  We are glad to see touchscreen phones selling like hot cakes.  Obviously, the iphone touch screenwas the leader in this technology, however, there is now the LG touch screen,Nokia touch screen, and a few others actively supplying top of the range contract touch screen mobile phones.

Iphone

The touch magic which caught consumer attention with the unveiling of iPhone in 2007, continued to dazzle in 2008.  Product Summary The good: The Apple iPhone has a stunning display, a sleek design, and an innovative multitouch user interface.  More signs are pointing to Apple continuing the trend of a mid-year iPhone refresh, aiming towards a summer launch for 2009.  The iPhone is $200 for the 8GB model, and you also have to sign up for a data plan thats $30/mo on top of your voice bill.  I have had the opportunity to play with an IPhone 3G for extended periods of time recently and I am impressed with the quality and ease of use and also with the responsive touch screen.  It’s important to remember though that the iPhone is basically in the same class of devices as a Blackberry, Windows-based mobile device or any other smartphone.  Apple iPhone 3GThe iPhone has been a top seller ever since its debut, so it comes as no surprise that it would be one of the hottest gadgets of 2008.  See the reviews and comments in the iPhone Thread of these forums.

Blackberry

The earlier generation BlackBerrys with their strict business emailing focus left little scope for entertainment.  The Storm is the first serious attempt by Blackberry makers Research in Motion to tap into the entertainment segment.  Like every other Blackberry, the Storm offers seamless email integration and wireless access.  The Storm is the first touch phone providing haptic feedback, a technology patented by BlackBerry as SurePress.  Unlike other touch phones, Blackberry Storm features a screen which is physically receptive to touch, providing haptic feedback.  The web browser on BlackBerrys, which has always been a massive disappointment for users has been substantially upgraded in the BlackBerry Storm touchscreen phone.  Though BlackBerry Storm users won’t need to download Opera Mini or other similar browsers anymore for a richer surfing experience, the BlackBerry Storm browser is still no match for the iPhone’s Safari browser.

“Touchscreen phones are among the hottest phones out now, with the iPhone 3G, the Google Android G1, HTC’s Touch Diamond and the BlackBerry Storm leading the pack,” Scott Taves reports for MSNBC.  From the Apple’s iPhone to the BlackBerry’s smart phones, even Nokia is jumping on the band wagon with their latest touch screen capable handsets.  While the mobile app race is still in its infancy, the iPhone is already well ahead of rivals such as Research In Motion’s (Nasdaq: RIMM) BlackBerry and T-Mobile’s G1, which features Google’s Android operating system.  And, after all, the iPhone 3G and BlackBerry Storm need some good-natured competition.
